Open Shelving in the Kitchen

 via Urban Grace

One of the hottest trends in kitchen design right now is eliminating upper cabinets and opting for open shelving instead. Some people love this practical idea, while others loath the thought of everything being exposed. There are arguments for both sides: Pro's include the fact that open shelving keeps everything you need at an arms reach, and offers a decorative purpose to your everyday items. Some may argue that the cons to open shelving include constant battles with dust, and an ongoing fuss over staging every single item on the shelves.

Real people can live with open shelved kitchens too, not just the design obsessed perfectionists! The important thing to remember when deciding to go with open shelving in your kitchen is a simple principal in decorating your home - love what you own! If you specifically choose your dishes and small appliances because you love them, you're going to like looking at them every day! And you don't have to spend a ton of money on new dishes either, there are inexpensive options out there whether you like the look of coordinating, white, mix matched, or colorful dishes. Life's too short not to love your dishes, along with everything else in your home!

This trend in kitchens started out as a casual alternative to the more formal look of all matching cabinetry but it is slowly stretching into other design styles. Whether your specific style is casual cottage, contemporary, eclectic, or more formal, you can achieve the look of a gorgeous kitchen with using open shelving.
