Room of the day - Adorable Nursery

This adorable and whimsical nursery belongs to a lucky little girl named Rowan, who just so happens to be the daughter of popular blogger Jen from Jenloveskev. I discovered her blog several years ago and have been following her and her husband (and now daughter) ever since. She blogs mostly about fashion, art, food and happenings in her life, but every now and then she showcases her decorating abilities as well! Jen is definitely one talented moma!

Isn't that bird mobile amazing?! I love all of the handmade and vintage items in Rowans bedroom. Can you imagine how cool it would be growing up with your very own little tee pee in your bedroom as a kid?! Its filled with pillows and blankets and is the perfect place to read, play and hide. I am really drawn to the 'un-decorated' qualities of this nursery, it's such a fresh take on a babies room. What do you think?

Wedding Wednesday: The Favors

Yes, it's the end of January and yes there are still some details from my October wedding that I haven't gotten around to sharing with you yet. . . Like the DIY wedding favors!

I searched high and low for something unique to give our wedding guests to take home with them. I wanted it to be something I could make myself and wouldn't cost a lot of money. (We were trying to stick to a tight budget, remember?!) I also liked the idea of something that could be used again and again, not something cheesy that guests would throw in the trash after the wedding. I stumbled upon this tile coaster idea and fell in love!

I was obsessed with the idea of giving our guests something handmade that they could use in their own home. I thought these tile coasters were not only adorable but would be pretty simple to make and fit the bill perfectly! Here's what my supply list looked like:

- 200 tile coasters purchased from Habitat for Humanity

- Book of colorful scrapbook paper

- 2 bottles of Mod Podge

- Several foam brushes

- 2 yards of black felt (for the backs so that the tiles don't scratch furniture surfaces)

- Fabric glue

- Clear acrylic spray paint

I rounded up a couple of girls to help me on a Saturday back in July and we went to town making tile coasters. I precut all of the scrapbook paper and black felt in order for us to set up one giant assembly line. It took all afternoon and evening but at the end of the day we had made enough coasters for each guest to take two home with them. I tied them together using hemp twine and placed a sticker on the back thanking guest for sharing our special day with us.

At the wedding we placed a set of coasters at each place setting. I love how all the bight and bold patterns looked against the rustic burlap table runners.

I can't tell you how excited I get when we visit friends or family and see OUR wedding coasters sitting out on their coffee tables or side tables in their living rooms!

Island Style

Trend Alert: Ombre

The french word 'ombre' literally means shadow or shaded. This trend has been popular in fashion for quite some time, but has recently been popping up everywhere in interiors. In design, it is gradation and shading of color (typically going from light to dark) on fabric, walls, furniture or any other surface. I adore this trend and it's probably because it reminds me of tie dye! Although it is a little more sophisticated than tie die, but striking none the less. Take a look of some examples of ombre;

Ooh la la, how I love this living space designed by Muse Interiors! The dark velvet sofa with nailhead trim, gray grasscloth wallpaper and quatrefoil floor lamp are all so gorgeous! I also dig the playful pillows that pop and the citrus green garden stool. The wainscotting in this space is also to die for! What do you think of this beautiful living room, love it as much as I do?!

DIY Kitchen Art

I created an art print to hang in my kitchen and I LOVE the way it turned out! Take a look:

I used Gimp (the free version of Photoshop) to create a 'kitchen conversion chart'. I can't tell you how many times I have had to hop on the computer while cooking or baking to google a conversion! I figured this handy dandy (and super cute) piece of art would be the solution to my problem. Here's a closeup:

Feel free to download it and print it for yourself if you wish! (It's formatted as 5x7.) I mounted it on a piece of white cardstock and framed it in a white frame I already had. It's the perfect addition to my kitchen and cost only pennies! What do you think? Oh, and don't you just love my red Kitchen Aid mixer? I sure do. It was seriously one of the best wedding gifts we received - it's not only super functional but shiny and pretty and looks great in my kitchen! What's your favorite kitchen accessory or gadget? I absolutely adore this bedroom by Los Angeles designer Vanessa DeVargas! In my book, you can never go wrong with a white upholstered headboard (with nailhead trim) and crisp white bedding! I love the custom two-tone drapes with gray trellis fabric and pink trim that coordinates with the gray chevron pillows with pink piping on the bed. It's just proof that it's all in the details! I also really love the look of the layered flokati rug ontop of the jute rug. The bookshelves with wallpapered back shelves is also a nice detail. The whole room is just super cute, don't you think?!

I have a quick little announcement to make. . . I'm leaving tomorrow to go on vacation to Southern California with my husband, step kids and in-laws. We'll be going to Disneyland and Universal Studios, soaking in the warm sun and getting all sorts of great family time in. I can't wait!! The Countdown Begins!

When reflecting back, 2011 has been a HUGE year so far, personally, emotionally, professionally, mentally, and physically. It's been filled with all sorts of ups and downs, successes and failures, happy times and new chapters for me. 2011 has been a whirlwind rollercoaster of a year, to say the least! I'm looking forward to 2012 and the opportunity for a fresh new start. I haven't put together a resolution list just yet, but I have some ideas in the works. . . I really can't believe the holiday season has come and gone so quickly and that it's already 2012 as of tomorrow. I'm spending this New Years Eve probably cuddled on the couch next to my husband and watching the ball drop on TV. Yes, I'm getting old and will admit that I am just looking forward to staying home, enjoying a nice dinner and some wine and vegging out. We are leaving for a big vacation in a few days (down to Southern California and Disneyland!) so we are just laying low for the holiday and prepping for our trip instead of going out. Red & Gray Color Combo

Red and gray is a unique color combination that I am seeing more and more of lately. Since gray has become the new 'neutral' in interior design, red is a great option for a coordinating color. Red is a stimulating color that evokes our senses while gray tends to be a more calming and relaxing hue. When you pair the two together, the juxtaposition is fabulous! Eat-In Kitchens

As much as I love a beautifully decorated formal dining room, lets be realistic. Typically most people only use their formal dining rooms every so often. Eat-in kitchens are pretty much a standard in homes now days because they are so realistic and convenient. Breakfast nooks, banquettes and islands are all great options for an eat-in kitchen, but what about incorporating a dining table with chairs right smack in the middle of the room? If you have a large enough kitchen, I think this is a great option! It's super functional and creates a cozy and inviting kitchen perfect for family dinners as well as entertaining! Hallway Improvements

Right before Christmas I tackled a project around my house that I have been dying to get done for some time. . . the hallway! Take a look at the 'before';

This is the wall between the bathroom door and the doorway into the kitchen. As you can see, the thermostat is right smack in the middle making it a tricky spot to incorporate any wall decor. I decided a gallery style wall of pictures and art would be the best solution.

After we painted over the boring beige with a light and airy gray color I finally hung up some pictures and art, all framed in white. I used several pictures from our recent wedding as well as a couple pieces of art that we picked up while on our honeymoon. I also incorporated a wooden letter 'O' (since my new last name is Olvera.)

I created an art print with our wedding vows written on it and framed that in the upper left hand corner. Here's a closeup:

My sister purchased a custom piece of art from Etsy, framed it and gave it to us as a wedding gift. It's our names and wedding date written in the sand which is hanging in the bottom right hand corner.

Here's a close up of my favorite wedding picture which is framed and hanging in the center above the thermostat;

I also hung up the abalone shell that we used to hold our wedding bands during the ceremony;

The picture in the upper right hand corner was purchased in a surf shop in Santa Cruz while we were there for a week after the wedding. It's a shot of the iconic light house taken by a local artist.

So what do you think? I think the thermostat blends in now and isn't such an eye sore, which was my goal from the beginning. It wasn't my initial intentions to create a whole 'wedding wall' of pictures and art, but I love, love, love the way it turned out. Of course down the road if I tire of all the pictures I can change them out, or add to it, but for now I love having a wall of special reminders from our wedding day and honeymoon!

Holiday Decor Around My House

Hey ya'll! It's the Tuesday before Christmas and I am finally getting around to taking some pictures of the decorations I put up this year. As most of you know our house is pretty small but I've managed to get the living room and dining room looking as festive as possible given the limited space that we have. This year I went with a turquoise, silver and lime green theme. I also incorporated white starfish and lots of burlap into the holiday decorations. Take a peak;

I made the wreath and stockings myself using burlap fabric left over from my wedding. I made the 'Merry Christmas' banner over the fireplace by tracing letters onto brown paper bags, cutting them out and stringing them on twine. I also made the tree skirt and bows on the tree out of the leftover burlap fabric and the white starfish are also leftover from the wedding. I picked through my existing ornament collection and pulled out all of the turquoise, silver and lime green ones so I didn't have to spend any money on new ornaments this year. You might have seen my chandelier adorned with ornaments already (I shared it with you here a couple weeks ago.) During the holidays I like to burn candles in the fireplace to give the room a nice cozy feel, since we can't have real fires.

So what do you think?! I love the way everything came together and was happy I decided to change things up and not use any red this year! What about you, do you stick to the tried and true green and red color combo when decorating for Christmas? Or are you a rule breaker and try out new things each year? Please share!

'O Christmas Tree!

I'm still working on putting the finishing touches on my Christmas tree. I haven't gotten it quite right, but it is getting close! I've been a fan of Tobi Fairley since Traditional Home Magazine named her one of the top 20 young designers in 2009. Her interiors combine just the right amount of bright colors and geometric patterns while still maintaining a traditional feel. Tobi Fairley has been featured in numerous design publications in the last couple of years, her business is booming and she even writes an awesome blog that is worth checking out. Oh, and did I mention she puts on 'design camps' a couple of times a year? How fun would that be to attend?! This Arkansas interior designer is surely on a roll! 2012 Color of the Year!

Pantone recently announced the color of the year for 2012. . . Tangerine Tango!

Every year Pantone, the global authority on color, reveals the color direction for interior design, fashion, cosmetics, and graphic design. This years hue, tangerine tango is an electric orange red and is warm, uplifting and energizing. This bold color evokes a feeling of heat, drama and exoticism, while still coming across as comfortable and friendly. I personally love this color for it's boldness and ability to mix well with all sorts of other hues. Combined with neutrals it can be very soothing, or mix it with another vibrant color and it can have quite the impact! Tangerine tango is definitely a happy color. It's eye catching as well as versatile and I think we'll be seeing a lot more of it in the coming year!

I took my own advise from yesterday on decorating with ornaments and fancied up my dining room chandelier. I used turquoise, lime green and silver ornaments (which coordinate with my tree) and hung them using fishing line. The shiny ornaments add just enough sparkle and holiday cheer to the space!

How is your holiday decorating coming along? I'm hosting Christmas this year (which is a first!) so I am trying to get every inch of the house feeling festive! I'll share more of my projects with you in the coming weeks before Christmas. . . Can you believe we're only 18 days away?! Eeeek!

I've been a long time fan of Naomi Stein from the blog Design Manifest. Her style is just so unique and I love her sense of humor and writing style. (If you aren't familiar with it, you should definitely go check it out!) I've been following her current project of redecorating her loft since the beginning and was ecstatic to see it featured on Design Sponge earlier this week! She has done an incredible job creating a home that is stylish and unique, all while being thrifty and budget-conscious. She's done so by shopping at auctions, refinishing pieces she already has and scoring great finds on Craigslist. Take a peak at Naomi's awesome Philadelphia loft;

Desk Reveal

The chair that I ordered for my step daughter's bedroom way back in September finally arrived!

Home Decorators James Side Chair

If you recall I have been slowly but surely redoing her bedroom, one ugly piece of furniture at a time. My latest project was her desk. Take a look at the before picture;

Ugh! This hand-me-down desk and chair came from my inlaws and had been screaming for a makeover for the longest time. I debated back and forth about painting it a fun and bright color, but in the end I decided to go with white. (It's timeless and will grow with her from being a ten year old and into her teens.) I sanded, primed and painted the piece and added new hardware and WOW what a difference!

I don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing the transformation that takes place when you paint and revamp an otherwise dated and unattractive looking piece of furniture and turn it into something updated and chic! It's such a gratifying feeling.

So what do you think? Pretty drastic, right?! I love the way it turned out. Originally I had planned on finding cutesy, decorative hardware but the desk required 12 and I couldn't find anything budget friendly. I decided to go with these simple brushed nickle knobs that were only 90 cents a piece and I'm glad I did. They look perfect on the desk and coordinate with the other metal finishes in the room (like the chair, waste basket, etc.)

Can you guess what theme I'm going with for my Christmas decor this year?! Yup, you guessed it. Wedding Wednesday: Thumbprint Tree

Lots of brides now days are trying to find fun and unique ideas to incorporate into their weddings. I know I sure was when I was planning mine! Instead of a traditional guest book at the wedding reception, I opted for a 'thumbprint tree'. These have gained in popularity over the last couple of years, but are still a unique spin on the old traditions of guest books or signing a picture frame mat.

This post I did over a year ago on wedding thumbprint trees is the #3 post of all time on this blog, having been viewed almost 5,000 times. Crazy! I guess these babies are popular!

There are tons of wedding thumbprint trees out there to purchase. Etsy alone has hundreds to choose from. I decided to go the ~~cheaper~~ DIY route and create my own! I bought a sheet of nice quality multimedia art paper from Michaels and sketched out a fun and whimsical tree. Once I got it just right, I went over the drawing using a fine tip sharpie. I customized it by drawing our initials 'engraved' in the tree trunk and drew our names and wedding date at the bottom. I found turquoise and lime green mini stamp pads from Joanns for guests to ink up their thumbs to 'leaf' a print. By the end of the night it was filled with our all 75 guests thumbprints and ready to take home to be framed!

I created a picture table that had framed wedding photos from my husband and I's families (parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents) as well as a clothesline of pictures of us growing up and throughout our relationship. I used this table for the wedding thumbprint tree. I really loved the way it all turned out. I even created a burlap banner that read 'All you need is love' and draped it across the table. (Which just so happened to be the song I walked down the aisle to!) The entire table was a great focal point and such a personal touch and I think our friends and family really liked it too!

Do you want to know the best part about using potted orchids for table decor at your wedding? (Aside from being totally eco-friendly. . .) You get to take them home and enjoy them for months to come! Here's one of the orchids sitting on the ottoman in my living room;

Myself and several friends and family all took home the orchids that we used as centerpieces. I love that we were able to purchase these a week before the wedding (from a local farmers market for only $8 each!) and that they will last as long as they get some sun light and a little TLC.

Do you find it hard to keep orchids alive and blooming? Here's a quick tip. . . DO NOT over water them! Once every 10-14 days is typically sufficient.

Mix and Match Chairs

I think the first time I saw a dining area with mix and matched chairs was on the set of 'Friends' back in the 90's. I remember loving Monica's hand-me-down, shabby chic apartment. . .especially those chairs!

Fast forward to 2011 and you will notice that more and more people are opting for non-matching dining chairs. Who says all of the chairs around a table need to match, anyway?! I love straying from the typical 'decorating rules' every now and again, and this rule was meant to be broken! I know, I know. . . I have been a little absent around the blog lately. I have been up to my eye balls in work (which is a great thing!) Here's a couple quick shots of a wedding that I was hired to help decorate on 11/11/11. . . We spent three days getting the tent ready for a guest list consisting of 325 people.

I'll share more details from this fabulous, rustic-inspired wedding with you later, I promise!

Wedding Wednesday: The Flowers!

I've been dying to share all the details about the flowers from our wedding! You might remember me mentioning that I was going to take on the daunting task of creating all of the bouquets, boutonnieres & wristlets myself. (I did a trial run bouquet here and followed this tutorial here.) Although it was time consuming, everything turned out absolutely beautiful, exactly how I wanted them to look, and the best part of all. . . I saved hundreds of dollars by doing it myself!

Let's start from the beginning. . . Friday afternoon before the wedding (which took place on a Saturday) I went to Costco and pretty much wiped out the flower section! For my bouquet I purchased two dozen white roses and a large bouquet of white flowers, which I can not identify. (At the time I could care less, they were inexpensive and fit the bill!) For the bridesmaid's bouquets I purchased all of the magenta colored flowers I could get my hands on in the Costco flower section. I even asked an employee if they had more in the back and was escorted to the walk in refrigerator where I was able to pick out exactly what I wanted. (Hey, it never hurts to ask, right?!) I felt like I needed a couple more unique looking flowers for the bridesmaid bouquets so we stopped at Trader Joe's where I picked up a couple of bouquets of magenta colored dalias. I kept all of the flowers in 10 gallon buckets until I was able to start arranging them. At about 11:30 pm the night before the wedding I got started! Luckily I had a couple extra helping hands.

I also purchased 13 potted orchids from the farmers market the weekend before (for only $8 a pop!) to be used for the bouquets, boutinears and wristlets, in addition to using one orchid on each of the 9 tables at the reception. I plucked the orchid blossoms off of the plant and attached them to floral wiring using floral tape in order to give them a 'stem'. This was quite tedious and time consuming, but I was determined to have orchids in the bouquets!

To see the full tutorial on how to create your own bouquet, go here. They explain it much better than I ever could! . . . Anyhow, once I had assembled the bouquets using floral tape, I kept the stems long and left them in sitting in water over night in the 10 gallon buckets.

We were up until 2:30am the night before the wedding getting everything done. Yes, it would have been nice to get a good nights sleep, but honestly it was a lot of fun and totally worth every penny that was saved by doing it myself.

The morning of the wedding we woke up at 7:00 and wrapped the bridesmaid bouquets with burlap, secured them with pins and cut the stems. At the last second I realized I didn't have enough burlap for my bouquet but my sister saved the day by having some extra satin ribbon on hand. I actually liked the way my bouquet turned out wrapped with the white ribbon more so than if all had gone according to plan and I had used the burlap!

I created a couple extra orchids with wire stems to use in my hair, my step daughters hair and for my two nieces.

I made turquoise beaded wristlets for the mother of the bride, mother of the groom as well as for my sister-in-law. I also made boutonnieres for all the men (fathers, brothers, stepson, etc.)

The stems of the boutonnieres were also wrapped with a bit of burlap and secured with hemp twine. Out of all the flower arrangements I made, these were honestly the toughest and trickiest! The stems of the orchids were so delicate and I broke several in the process. But luckily I had extra! Everything turned out perfect and they all looked fantastic for the wedding!

So what do you think?! I really loved the way everything turned out and do not regret tackling this time consuming task the night before and the morning of the wedding. It's all about planning and patience. If you are willing to take on such a massive DIY project in order to save a ton of money, go for it, that's my motto! Everybody at the wedding could not believe I had made all the bouquets, which was the best compliment I think I could have received!

Wedding Wednesday!

Well, I've been happily married now for over two weeks. The wedding was so memorable, so perfect and so much fun! We strived to have a relaxed and casual beach wedding with a rustic and bohemian vibe and I think we achieved just that. There are thousands of pictures from the BIG day but I tried to narrow them down to just a few favorites to share with you. . . Take a peak at our wedding;

We were married Saturday, October 15th on the beach in Aptos, California. I prayed to the weather gods for six months that we would have clear skies (and no rain) on our big day, and sure enough it was gorgeous out! The fog started to burn off and the sun peaked through the clouds just as the ceremony began. I walked down the aisle as my husbands brother played 'All You Need is Love' on the acoustic guitar. We had a short ceremony (about 10 minutes long) and a good friend of ours was the officiant. Him and I collaborated just two days before hand to put together the ceremony. It could not have been more perfect - just enough laughs and just enough tears were shed by everyone in attendance. My stepdaughter carried an abalone shell with our rings tied into it while my step son served as the best man. My two sisters (who happen to be twins) played 'rock, paper, scissors' just moments before walking down the aisle in order to determine who would be the maid of honor while my cousin (and good friend) served as the other bridesmaid.

We asked a friend to take pictures for us, and she did a phenomenal job! Our 'getaway' vehicle was a car we borrowed from a family friend - a red, 1967 Chevy Chevelle with black racing stripes - so hot! The reception was held just 10 minutes away at the La Selva Beach Clubhouse. After searching high and low for the perfect place to hold the party, we settled on the Clubhouse because it was SO affordable and had a lot of rustic charm. We even had a fire going in the huge fireplace all night night long! I kept the decorations simple - burlap table runners, potted orchids and loose flowers in mason jars adorned the tables. We served beer, wine and sangria and for dinner we served traditional Hawaiian food that got rave reviews. We had a dessert buffet table with all sorts of cookies, pies, cakes and candies to choose from. It was seriously one great party - we danced and drank and ate all night long! It was nothing fussy nor fancy, just a lot of love and a lot of fun, which is just our style.

There are so many more details to share that I will break it down into a couple of other 'Wedding Wednesday' posts over the next couple of weeks! I hope you enjoyed the peak into what was seriously the best day ever!

My wedding went off without a hitch, the honeymoon was a blast but I am ready to get back to the real world, back to blogging and back to designing! After consecutively blogging for over two years now, sadly, I have to take a break. I realized after posting only once last week that it isn't fair to me or my readers to keep up like this. My plate is pretty full right now. . . I'll be getting married in a couple of weeks, going on a honeymoon in addition to building my business in between. While I have been engaged for over a year now, the procrastinator in me has left several of the huge DIY projects for the wedding for crunch time, which is NOW. I've decided to take one month off from blogging so that I can spend as much time prepping for the wedding as possible, enjoy every moment of it and not stress out about it, as well as to be able to enjoy my honeymoon without worrying about the blog. But don't cry, I'll be back November 1st to share some exciting new stuff with ya'll, as well as all the goodies and pictures from my wedding. I hope you guys understand and aren't too dissapointed, but every now and then we all need a break!

I'm headed to Lake Tahoe for the weekend with a bunch of girls for my bachelorette party! We're staying at a cute cabin near the water and plan to kick back and relax, enjoy good food and drinks, great company and hang out by the lake. Wedding Wednesday: DIY Bouquet!

A couple of months ago I found the perfect tutorial for making your own wedding bouquets. The instructions seemed simple enough, so I made the decision that I would DIY all the bouquets for my upcoming wedding. I wanted to do a trial run, just to make sure this would be a task simple enough to do the night before the wedding. (I'm imagining me and all the girls having a big slumber party, sipping on champagne and ya know, assembling flowers. This is normal, right?!)

I bought $10 worth of flowers from the grocery store consisting of yellow and pink carnations and pink alstromeria. (When I make the actual bouquets for my wedding they will be different colors.) I brought them home and left the flowers in the kitchen sink until I was ready to go to work!

The first step was removing all of the access foliage off of the stems. Then I trimmed them down to about 14 inches.

I started with three center flowers and using floral tape, wrapped the stems starting at about an inch below the bloom, wrapping all the way down leaving approximately 5 inches of stem exposed at the bottom. I'd place two or three more stems in the bunch in my hand, and wrap again with the floral tape. Once all the flowers were placed I wrapped it one more time with the floral tape, just to make the bouquet was as solid and sturdy as possible. I cut a strip of burlap fabric that was about two feet long and 2 inches wide (instead of using ribbon like most bouquets) and wrapped the base of it to conceal the floral tape. I secured the burlap with a couple of floral pins and voilà!

After completing the bouquet I realized the stems could be a little shorter, but other than that I think it turned out fabulously!!! It took me about 45 minutes to make, I was a little slow going in the beginning but picked up speed and confidence as I got going. (I think it should take about 2 hours to make 4 bouquets the night before the wedding.) Total cost, including the floral tape, floral pins with pearl heads and flowers, I spent around $15 to make this bouquet. I let it sit in a vase of water for several days, and by the fourth day it started to wilt, so I am super confident that making them the night before they will still look fresh the next day.

Project Update: Jordyn's Bedroom

There has been a whole lotta painting go'in on around my house, that's for sure! Last week I revealed the bookcase in my soon-to-be stepdaughters bedroom that I revamped with a little paint and restyling. Well, the painting shenanigans didn't stop there. . . I'm in the midst of tackling another piece of furniture from her bedroom with a coat of fresh, new paint. Here's a picture I snapped yesterday of the progress:

I've since applied primer and am getting ready to throw on the first coat of glossy, white paint. Once I'm done painting and sealing the desk, I think some cutsie new hardware is definitely in order. I'm considering something like this:

I have a soft spot when it comes to turquoise, gourd shaped lamps! This one is the perfect size to sit on top of the desk, and at only $24.99 I think I can squeeze it into the budget.

I found a really fun and funky starburst mirror at HomeGoods recently to go above the headboard (more on that project later.) I love it, and for $12 it can't be beat!!

(I'm not sure why the walls look like they are painted a pink-coral color?! They are just boring beige until I work up the energy and find the time to re-paint them! It must be a camera-reflection-thing.)

Yesterday I ordered this chair from Home Decorators to go with the desk:

It's called the 'James Side Chair' but we all know it's a Bertoia look-a-like! Although I am a huge fan of the mid-century designer chair, I could never in a million years consider spending $539 on the real Bertoia version, especially since it's just going into a kid's bedroom. When I saw the look-a-like from Home Decorators on sale for $79, I was SOLD! The vinyl seat pad of course with get a cover made out of a cute, colorful, coordinating fabric.

I'm so excited that this bedroom makeover is finally starting to come together! I'll share more with you later as I get closer to being complete! (If you want to see my initial design plans for this space, go here.)

Wedding Wednesday: The Invites!

As most of you know, I'm getting married soon. . .We will be having a small, casual wedding on the beach with our immediate family and closest friends. I have been planning, crafting and DIY'ing every last detail over the last several months! The invitations went out a couple of weeks ago so I thought it was time I shared them with you all. . .

Note: the date of the wedding has been removed for privacy reasons

Being the do-it-yourselfer that I am, I created the invitations myself. I printed them using an ink jet printer on white card stock and I think they turned out quite lovely. The envelopes are 'brown paper bag' from Paper Source and I used scrapbook paper from Michael's to make the envelope liners. I wrapped the invitation, map and rsvp card together with a strip of burlap fabric and tied it with hemp twine which gives them that beachy-rustic feel I was going for. I was very pleased with the way they turned out. What do you think?!

I adore this femanine, bohemian inspired bedroom! If I was a single gal, I could totally see my own bedroom looking a little something like this. (However, I'm not, and I can't imagine my honey letting me paint the walls lavender. . . darn it. . . sigh!) Revamped and Restyled Bookcase

I've been slowly but surely redecorating my soon-to-be stepdaughter's bedroom. She has a odd ball assortment of hand me down furniture that I have been dying to paint. Her desk and dresser are solid wood with good lines and have definite potential but I decided to start the furniture makeover process with the bookshelf. It however is not solid wood but one of those laminate, out-of-the-box type deals that dates back 20+ years. I had never painted furniture that wasn't real wood before so I did a little research and luckily found out it is pretty simple! In fact, I would say it's easier than painting real wood furniture because you get to skip the dreaded sanding step all together! Anyhow, here's the 'before & afters':

What was once brown and ugly is made fresh and new again with a few coats of primer and glossy white paint! As you can see from the 'before' picture the bookshelf was busting at the seams with toys, books, movies, games, art supplies, cd's and more. Jordyn, my soon-to-be stepdaughter, turned 10 a few months ago and proclaimed recently that she is no longer 'into' Barbies. Fine by me! 3/4's of those bins were filled to the brim with the likes of Barbie, Ken, Gabriella, and Hannah Montana dolls which I was happy to box up and store in the garage to save for future daughters/nieces/etc. I was able to relocate all of the crayons, markers and art supplies to her desk after cleaning it out and making space in there. I also sorted through her books and am donating a lot of them. (She's in 5th grade and reading novels now, so there is no need for the baby books anymore!) The only thing I purchased for this make over were the 3 yellow bins from the dollar store which now house all of her DVD's. I love the concealed storage that they provide and the pop of yellow they add! Now her bookcase is not only functional but stylish as well!

In order to paint the bookcase I used primer, paint and polycrylic sealer that I already had in my stash of paint supplies (leftover from several other painting projects like this one and this one.) I am pretty happy with this $3.00 makeover and can't wait to tackle the rest of the projects I have planned for her bedroom! What do you think of the newly revamped and restyled bookcase?!

Bookcase Styling

Styling a bookcase can be a daunting task if you aren't sure where to start or when to stop. The trick is finding the right balance when it comes to the sizes, shapes, colors and textures of the items you are storing and displaying. It's not rocket surgery (ha ha) but it takes practice to create a well styled bookcase.

In my opinion a bookcase should serve two purposes - 1) a place to store books and/or other functional items that you use regularly and 2) to display items and accessories that have a personal meaning to you. I'm not a big fan of just 'stuff' on shelves just because it matches your home's decor. While this is a great way to stage a house, it's not real. Fill your home (and your bookcases) with things that you love and the things that you use and you will create an environment that is unique and personal!

House Envy

I spotted the picture of this dining space above, on Pinterest earlier today and had to see more! Turns out it's the home of Erica from Design Blahg and guess what? It's a 690 sq. ft. apartment in Brooklyn, New York. Yes, you heard me right, 690! This small space is just proof that you don't need thousands and thousands of square feet to create a stylish, sophisticated home. Here's a peak at the floor plan so you can see how the home is laid out:

Erica's place was featured in Apartment Therapy's Small Cool 2010 series and you can read more about all of her space saving ideas here. Can you believe she actually has upper kitchen cabinets that are empty?! The smallest space I ever lived in was a studio apartment in Los Angeles and I recall having to store my extra sheets and blankets in my upper kitchen cabinets. Have you ever lived in a home so small you had to get majorly creative when it came to storage solutions?!

Wedding Wednesday: Family Photo Table

Out of all the projects I'm working on for my upcoming wedding, I think I might be the most excited about the family photo table I am creating! I asked my mom as well as my fiance's mom to gather up photos from their weddings and their parents weddings as well. I even have a few sets of great grandparent's wedding photos too! I'm going to be displaying them around the guest book (thumbprint tree) for every to look at and even made little plaquards to let everyone know the couple's name and the year they were married. I didn't think this small project would be something I turned out loving so much, but I think it's going to look great! You'll have to wait till after the wedding to see how my picture table turned out!

Project Sneak Peak

Good morning and happy Monday to everyone! I'm back again to share the details of a project I'm currently working on. . .

Floor Plan:

Design Board:

We're using creamy white shaker cabinets with a gorgeous quarts countertop and timeless subway tile backsplash. The floors will be a dark rustic hardwood which will go throughout the house. I selected a farmhouse sink and opted to do open shelving to the right and left of the window above the sink. The other wall has enclosed cabinets for concealed storage. The new appliances will all be stainless steel. The light fixtures above the bar area are chrome and have sort of a rustic country feel, but with a modern twist! The window above the sink will have bamboo blinds with a cornice made out of suzani inspired fabric. I selected Bortoia chrome stools for the bar area and the long, opposing wall will have a collection of framed botanical prints.

So what do you think of this kitchen remodel design?! I'm really excited about this project and am loving the way it's taking shape.

Chevron Floors & Rugs

Chevron, chevron, chevron. Every where you turn lately you see this distinctive, bold and graphic pattern being used! Chevron (a.k.a. 'zig zags') is such a striking design element no matter how or where it's used that I can't help but love it! I like to keep the pattern to a minimum in my tiny home (because it can be somewhat over powering when used in a small space) by just using it in accents like pillows. But if I had the space, I could imagine using the chevron pattern in a LARGE dose by covering the floor in it! Chevron inspired tile, hardwood, painted flooring and carpeting is a great way to make a bold and graphic statement on the floor, in any room. Check out a few examples;

You know me. . . I'm a sucker for white walls and white furnishings combined with pops of color in the accessories, so there is no denying that I am obsessed with this space! The white beams on the ceiling and the dark wood floors combined with the large windows that let the light stream in is just about perfection in my book. What do you think? I just wanted to pop in real quick and share with you a flower arrangement I made for my soon-to-be mother in law for her birthday earlier this week. . .

It looked so pretty sitting in my entryway that I almost didn't want to give it to her and keep it for myself to enjoy! The flowers were a $16 bunch I picked up from Costco. I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend. See you back here next week for some more design goodness!

Imagine my excitement yesterday when I was perusing the isles of bargain furniture and accessories at Ross and I spotted an entire section of ceramic garden stools!

Most of these stools were priced at $39.99 and $49.99. They had a variety of colors and styles to choose from too. But heck, at these prices, you could always take a can of glossy colored spray paint to one and paint it any color you wish! I was praticularly found of this purple garden stool, below.

They even had a couple of the uber-trendy elephant shaped ceramic garden stools. These were reasonably priced at $69.99.

This white one below reminds me of this stool available at Horchow for $200!

It was like I had died and gone to ceramic stool heaven! My head was spinning with excitement over these awesome deals! Have you found any great bargains on home decor items lately? Tell me I'm not the only one who gets this crazy excited over stuff like this. . . :)

House Envy

This Nantucket beach house was featured in Elle Decor recently and I just can't get it out of my head! To me, it is the perfect balance of contemporary and casual beach style living.

I love the built in desk flanking the fireplace and the sense of balance that this library achieves.

The family room features a low, sleek sectional sofa with throw pillows that add pops of playful color. I'm all about keeping the big ticket items (like upholstery) neutral and adding touches of color by means of accessories!!!

The breakfast area features my favorite tulip chairs. Love those white wood planked walls!

This home is located just a walkway through the dunes away from the ocean. Sigh!

Can't you just see yourself cooking in this kitchen?! I sure can.

Again, we see nuetral furnishings and pops of color in the pillows and accessories. This master bedroom is light, bright and airy.

Lucite desk. What more can I say?!

How fun is this children's space?! Loves the strips and pops of blue and turquoise.

Gorgeous, luxurious, minimalist bathroom. Again, sighhhhh!

I've been seeing the work of Los Angeles based interior designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard pop up everywhere since Million Dollar Decorator premiered in June. Although I could not stand his character on the show (or was that really him? who knows what's 'reality' anymore!) I do really love his portfolio! Here's a glimpse at some of my faves;

Gorgeous, right?! I love how a lot of the spaces have sort of a luxurious, exotic feel to them. If I had to sum up his design style into two words it would probably be 'global and glamorous'. To see more, go here.
